Two people were detained by North Sumatra University security guards stealing test papers for the second day of state university entrance exams Thursday.

An official at the Medan University, Siswo Suroso, said the theft occurred at around 7:30 a.m., before the start of the second and final day of the exams.

He said the two thieves broke into a room and took several test papers, but were spotted by security guards as they climbed out a window.

The alleged thieves, identified as Bernard Hutagalung and Yusuf Sinuraya, are both Medan city residents.

""They attempted to run away when security guards tried to stop them. But they were captured after one of them tripped and fell,"" Siswo told The Jakarta Post.

When questioned by guards, the two thieves said they were stealing the exam papers for a man they identified as Obet.

The two were promised Rp 2 million for stealing the exams on natural sciences.

""We don't know the reason behind their actions but we suspect the papers and answers would be distributed to university entrance test participants.

""But we don't know how they planned to distribute answers for the test,"" Siswo said.

The culprits were handed over to the Medan Police who questioned them.

Police are trying to determine whether more people were involved in the scheme.

Meanwhile, three students were taken to the police after they were caught receiving test answers to the Thursday test via SMS, in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

The three smuggled their cell phones into the exam room by hiding them in pockets and headscarves.

Thousands of students have shown up for the two-day university entrance exams across the country, vying for places at the country's state universities.

Test results will be made available online at www.spmb.org on Aug. 2 and will be officially announced in the mass media the following day.
