JAKARTA: The National Police have arrested Arief Ramon, an Indonesian distributor of imported medicines, over the illegal distribution and sale of Chinese medical products throughout the country.

National Police deputy chief on special crimes, Sr. Comr. Hadiatmoko, told reporters Wednesday during an inspection of Ramon's drugstore in Glodok that the West Jakarta shop front was one of the biggest distribution points for illegal medical products in Indonesia.

""It sold 25 types of traditional drugs that don't have any certification from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) or the Health Ministry,"" said Hadiatmoko.

He added, however, that the dealer had imported the drugs legally and that the police would investigate the potential involvement of officials at the Customs and Excise Office.

The police confiscated hundreds of boxes of traditional medicines from the store Monday.

Hadiatmoko called on the public to remain alert when consuming Chinese-brand drugs and to check whether the products have labels certified by BPOM and the Health Ministry. -- JP
