MEDAN, North Sumatra: The General Elections Commission (KPUD) in North Sumatra has agreed to start voter registration for the upcoming gubernatorial election in the province in August.

Head of KPUD in North Sumatra, Irham Buana Nasution, said Monday the decision was made to prepare for the election, which is slated for April 2008.

He said it is likely that more than three pairs of candidates would contest the election.

""So far we've seen problems that are likely to change the election schedule,"" Irham told The Jakarta Post.

The election will be conducted in nine stages, including the official nomination of candidates in February next year and campaigning in March.

The KPUD, he said, has proposed a Rp 400 billion budget to the provincial administration to hold the election. -- JP
