Proof demanded on SBY's first marriage

JAKARTA: Political expert Maswadi Rauf said Friday former deputy House speaker Zaenal Marif must provide evidence to prove President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's first marriage was legitimate.

""Don't accuse (Yudhoyono) without any proof,"" Maswadi told detik.com news portal.

Make it clear by showing the evidence.""

He said Yudhoyono could not be impeached even if Zaenal was able to provide evidence.

""Everyone has the right to get married.

""Many House members have more than one wife,"" Maswadi said.

He said the president could only be impeached if he had violated the 1945 Constitution.

He also said Zaenal had committed a very dangerous act by threatening to uncover Yudhoyono's first marriage after the president had approved the House leadership's motion to have him expelled from his post.

""If he can't prove it, he will be put in jail,"" Maswadi said. --JP
