Using freedom of speech responsibly

The Constitutional Court has removed articles from the Criminal Code that impeded on freedom of speech. It means that we have entered a golden era of free speech.

Expressing hatred or hostility toward the government and its leaders or burning effigies of the president and the vice president during demonstrations will not necessarily send you to a jail.

Cursing government officials in public is also part of freedom of expression and democracy. The decision has been welcomed by every journalist and writer.

Of course, freedom of expression is applicable only in a democratic regime. Any change to an autocratic government -- like through a coup -- makes it different.

Understandably, some pessimistic intellectuals are doubtful whether political stability will continue to prevail for a long period. After all, democracy is the best system when the country is not in danger.

Under emergency law, free speech may not be the best defense against foreign propaganda. It happened in East Timor.

Therefore, the articles of the Criminal Code, which had been effective since the colonial era, may return if the Republic of Indonesia is in danger or if there are strong reasons like fighting against so-called ""enemies of the state"" or terrorists.

For the time being, freedom of speech will be guaranteed with the press closely watching the development of democracy and the protection of human rights.

Therefore, we have to use freedom of expression either through speaking or writing responsibly. Avoid any insulting and defamatory remarks.
