City to get tough on illegal taxies

JAKARTA: The administration has promised a crackdown on taxicabs operating in Jakarta without permits.

""We'll take action against these taxis. I have refused to issue permits for some taxi companies, but they get operation permits from our neighbors and then operate their taxies in Jakarta. That is their trick,"" Governor Sutiyoso said Tuesday, as quoted by BeritaJakarta.com.

Sutiyoso was speaking during a break in a launch ceremony for a new executive taxi, the Maxicab, operated by PT Kharisma Muda.

The governor promised raids on illegal cabs, but did not give a timeframe.

The city administration has issued permits to about 25,000 taxies from a number of companies. --JP
