RI hopeful at bridge worlds

Indonesian Contract Bridge Association (Gabsi) has set high targets for its players competing in the September 30 to October 13 World Bridge Championships in Shanghai, China.

""We hope our players can reach the finals in the senior category and finish in the best eight in the open and ladies classes,"" Gabsi chairman Wimpy S. Tjetjep said late Tuesday.

""Our targets are modest (considering the) participation of bridge powerhouses like China.""

In June this year, Indonesia won a title in the senior event and finished third in the ladies, open, youths and school categories in the Asia Pacific Bridge Federation championships held in Bandung.

Gabsi's patron Aburizal Bakrie said he hoped national players would reach a higher outcome in Shanghai.

""The results in Bandung showed that we have world-class players,"" he said.

Indonesia's best records include runner-up at Bridge Olympics at Rhodes Island, Greece in 1996; winner of International Olympic Council Grand Prix at Lausanne, Switzerland in 2000; runner-up at Rosenblum Cup in Montreal, Canada in 2002; and runner-up at Senior Bowl at Estoral, Portugal in 2005.

Shanghai championships will only feature the senior, open and ladies categories. The other two categories of youth and school will be featured next year. -- JP
