KUTA: Some 450 dentists from around Indonesia gathered in Kuta on Thursday for the second Bali Orthodontic Conference and Exhibition.
The four-day-conference features seven speakers from Indonesia, Italy, Korea and the United States.
""Our purpose for this conference is to transfer knowledge to orthodontists in Indonesia. There are lots of new techniques and technologies in the field of orthodontics that are yet to be explored here,"" he said.
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularities, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.
Committee head for the conference Erwin Siregar said that there were only 350 orthodontists in Indonesia. ""Doctors should have the skills to treat malocclusions in Indonesia,"" he said.
""Attending an international orthodontic conference abroad is expensive, that's why we held one here with qualified speakers so that Indonesian dentists can learn from them,"" he said. -- JP
