JAKARTA: The city police are to investigate stores selling candy laced with formaldehyde that were reported by the Legal Aid Institute for Health late last month.
Comr. Yatino, from the trade and industry division of the Special Crimes Directorate, said Friday that the police had questioned three witnesses in connection with the case.
""We will survey the reported stores next week,"" he said.
The legal aid institute's spokesman, Iskandar Sitorus, said the police had interviewed the institute's director, Mohamad Sentot, and members Raden Aulia Taswin and Herbert Sitorus as witnesses.
The institute reported National Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency head Husniah Rubiana Thamrin Akib to the Jakarta Police for negligence in checking imported food products.
The institute also reported a number of stores for selling blacklisted Chinese imported candies containing formaldehyde.
The stores included Carrefour Duta Merlin and the Jakarta Fruit Market in Central Jakarta, Alfamart in Bukit Duri, South Jakarta, and the Sri Utami store at Jatinegara Market, East Jakarta. -- JP
