JAKARTA: Din Syamsuddin, chairman of the country's second largest Muslim organization Muhammadiyah, said Tuesday the government must patent the ""red and white"" rice variety.
The red and white rice was first invented last year and has been developed into the RI-1 variety.
The color of the rice resembles the country's flag.
Din said after a rice harvest ceremony in front of the Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University that the rice should be patented to prevent anyone from stealing the idea for commercial gains.
He said the patent would be a noted gift for the country's 62nd Independence Day on Aug. 17. -- JP
