SURABAYA, East Java: Police believe an explosion that occurred in Sampang, on Madura Island on Tuesday, came from gunpowder used to make firecrackers.

East Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Pudji Astuti said on Wednesday police had found a significant amount of gunpowder at the scene of the blast.

Local residents said firecrackers were regularly produced in Sampang and sold ahead of the fasting month of Ramadhan.

""The blast was low in intensity despite the 40 cm radius and 20 cm deep hole it created. We have questioned the owner of the house where the explosion took place. We believe the incident is not connected with the one in Pasuruan,"" he said.

He was referring to an explosion that occurred last week in Pasuruan regency, East Java, that killed three people.

Pudji said police would continue investigating the source of the blast.-- JP
