The latest addition to Jakarta's burgeoning mall culture recently staged what it termed an ""Exotic Journey"" in an attempt to awaken people's awareness of cultural diversity to mark Independence Day.
""The Exotic Journey"" was aimed at awakening the identity of the nation by featuring people's works and creations,"" Eky Mery, corporate PR coordinator of PT Summarecon Agung, the owner of Summarecon Mal Serpong (SMS) in Tangerang, told The Jakarta Post last week.
The ""Exotic Journey"" event, which ran from Aug. 12-19, featured demonstrations of statue making & body painting by the Asmat ethnic group, Balinese classic dances, Balinese musical instruments, children's puppet shows, and other contemporary dances and music.
Located in the Gading Serpong housing estate on Jl. Raya Serpong, some 20 kilometers west of Jakarta, SMS is a new leisure focal point for residents of Serpong, Tangerang.
The 65,000-square-meter mall was opened to the public on June 28 and it is hoped it will emulate the success of Mal Kelapa Gading, Gading Food City and La Piazza.
""SMS will form part of Gading Serpong's integrated business district, which will have two luxury hotels, two serviced apartment complexes, two apartment towers, and an office tower within the next 10 years,"" Eky said.
She said that the mall, which was designed by Cadiz International, was aimed at a wide range of visitors -- families, teenagers, businesspeople and executives looking for ""lifestyle updates"".
The atmosphere at SMS is similar to that of outdoor-cafe walks at the Cilandak Town Square and La Piazza, where visitors can enjoy sitting outside while dining and listening to live music.
""It is a great place for teenagers looking for a new hangout, families wishing to relax and business executives who need somewhere to meet their clients,"" Eky explained.
