YOGYAKARTA: Family planning officials from seven provinces across Java and Bali are attending a four-day meeting here that was officially opened Monday by Yogyakarta Vice Governor Paku Alam IX.

Head of the central office of the National Family Planning Coordinating Body, Sugiri Syarief, said Indonesia's annual population growth now stood at 1.3 percent, making the country a family-planning success story.

""That is why we have been made a model of success by other countries,"" said Sugiri.

""No matter how small the effort, they are of great significance for the empowerment of economically poor families to improve their lives,"" Sugiri said.

The head of Yogyakarta's Sleman regency, Ibnu Subiyanto, said family planning today went beyond just contraception to encompass programs aimed at empowering families in all aspects of life.

That is why, according to Ibnu, Sleman places such a high importance on human resources development.

""Development of various physical infrastructure here is just an instrument to empower and improve the quality of human resources. It is not the main goal,"" Ibnu told meeting participants. -- JP
