Railway maintenance

A- A A+

The latest train derailment in Batang, Central Java, was reportedly caused by a broken axle.

I am an old employee of Indonesian Railways. In the 1950's all railroad car axles were checked daily to see how many accumulated kilometers they had already run.

As soon as the specified number of kilometers was reached, the axle would be cut into pieces to prevent further use.

Is this still being done by the railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia?

I'm not so sure it is.
