JAKARTA: A regional record-keeping program is under way to help Asian youth become more involved with tsunami-stricken communities, hear local stories and learn the best ways to deal with the effects of such disasters.

Observers from India, Indonesia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka are gathering documents to be later summarized and presented at the 4th International Conference on Environmental Education to be held on Nov. 26-28 in Ahmedabad, India.

""Before November, we should already have gathered (information on) rehabilitation activities from various NGOs and communities in Aceh,"" said Ahmad Safrudin, the coordinator of the Joint Committee for the Eradication of Leaded Gasoline.

He said the people involved in the program had a comprehensive knowledge on disaster mitigation.

The program, which so far employs 20 personnel in tsunami-stricken areas, is aimed at backing up relief aid with the local knowledge needed to put it to effective use. -- JP
