PEKANBARU, Riau: Dozens of journalists staged a rally at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru protesting not being allowed to cover the visit of National Police Chief Sutanto and Attorney General Hendarman Supandji on Tuesday.

Bukitraya Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Jhon Wesly and his men reportedly had the reporters thrown out of the VIP lounge.

Some of the journalists argued with the policemen, saying the action was illegal.

""We work based on the existing laws. If the police chief and attorney general are having an internal meeting, that's no problem, but don't obstruct us from meeting them,"" said protest coordinator Rahmad.

However, Bukitraya Police patrol commander First Insp. M. Masri still prohibited reporters from entering.

""This place must be sterile. That's the orders from the Riau Police chief,"" said Masri.

Reporters then staged a boycott by hanging their cameras and ID cards on the locked gate. -- JP
