Anti-garbage campaign

The Jakarta Post ,  Jakarta   |  Fri, 09/14/2007 2:36 PM  |  Opinion

When I was growing up, I was taught that culture was the backbone of the nation. It shaped the path that directed people when they grew into adulthood, and was practiced for the rest of their life.

I believed that until I came to live in Southeast Asia. Good culture is marvelous and wonderful to experience, when people practice their traditional ways positively.

The sad culture experienced by most foreigners is one of garbage. It is thrown by people into the streets, rivers, out of cars and buses, from trains, into your seas.

When will it ever stop? Never. Until your culture changes.

Start in your school system, even before school age by the parents. Indonesia like many other Southeast Asian countries has wonderful cultures and a diverse wealth of opportunities.

Don't let it be destroyed by common garbage. Wake up and look after your beautiful country.

Your government may have to start with the slogan ""Clean up Indonesia Day"".
