TANGERANG: The Tangerang chapter of the Indonesian Red Cross said its blood supply decreases by 60 percent during Ramadhan.
The blood transfusion unit head, Achmad Shiddiq, said Monday the unit only collected around 40 blood bags a day during the fasting month, compared to between 80 and 100 blood bags in other months.
""Many people are reluctant to donate blood when they are fasting,"" Achmad was quoted as saying by news portal Tempointeraktif.com.
He said donating blood was neither medically dangerous nor a violation under Islamic law.
""However, we cannot force people to do so.""
Demand for blood through the unit, he said, was high as the unit served the blood supply for Tangerang, Serang, Cilegon, Lebak, West Java's Pandeglang and Jakarta.
According to Achmad, blood supply demand can reach between 60 and 70 blood bags per day. --JP
