Man gets 7 years for underage sex

JAKARTA: A closed trial at the East Jakarta District Court on Tuesday found a Koranic recital teacher guilty of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Presiding judge Djalili sentenced the girl's teacher, Hidayat, to seven years in jail and a Rp 50 million (US$5,319) fine for sex with a minor.

""The decision sets a good precedent for similar cases of abuse of women and children,"" Sri Nurherwati from the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute said in a press release.

She said the harsh judgment was the first of its kind to adequately deter sexual predators. -- JP
