JAKARTA: The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued an edict forbidding people to participate in slash and burn activities or to set fire forest areas, agricultural or plantation-related zones and any other activities that produce smoke, damage the environment or disrupt human life, a spokesman said Friday.
""Actually, the edict was issued a few months ago,"" said Rusdiansyah, chairman of the edict commission of MUI's South Kalimantan chapter, as quoted by Antara.
""But, we need to further disseminate it to the public during this dry season.""
Rusdiansyah said setting fire to bushes was totally banned because ""any small bush fires may lead to large-scale fires"".
He said forest fires could lead to deforestation, ""which at the end could trigger flash floods during the rainy season"".
Indonesia's bush fires produce smoke that disrupts air, land and sea transportation, human health and educational activities and provokes complaints from neighboring countries. -- JP
