CIREBON, West Java: A competition between three high-ranking officials running for mayor in Cirebon, has made the government in the city ineffective say council and members of the public.

""Administration in Cirebon has been ineffective for the last year, with many policies overlapping and poor implementation due to three officials competing for the upcoming election on Jan. 6, 2008,"" said the chairman of the City Councils commission for people's welfare, Tjipto, recently.

The three competing officials are Mayor Subardi, with support from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Deputy Mayor Agus Al Wafier from the National Mandate Party and Municipal Secretary Sutrisno from the Golkar Party.

A council member from the PDI-P, Andri Fernandi, said the participation of three high ranking officials in the January election had lead to a lack of coordination in the administration.

Coordinator of the NGO Coalition for Clean Government, Enang Iman Gana said that the nomination of the three candidates had caused the administration to fail to improve welfare for people living in the city, where 15,000 families live under the poverty line and 30,000 people are unemployed. -- JP
