SURABAYA: Police have arrested head of East Java Social Services Office Tatik Handayani for possessing 1.1 grams of methamphetamine (known in Indonesia as shabu-shabu), an officer said Wednesday. Her driver, identified as Supriyanto, was arrested at the same time.

Head of Surabaya Drug Crimes Unit, Adj. Sr. Comr. Abi Darrin, said that Tatik and Supriyanto were arrested in Surabaya on Monday evening, on Jl. Injoko, in front of Tatik's office.

The illicit substance, found on Tatik's person, was part of a 1.7 gram amount that Tatik had allegedly purchased earlier from an individual identified as Syafi'i for Rp 2.8 million (US$310). Syafi'i was arrested by the police earlier"" Abi said.

Taufik said the government official admitted to using drugs at the Tretes resort area in East Java.

Tatik's husband, employed by the East Java Agriculture Office, was shocked at the news that his wife and driver had been arrested.

Social Service Office head Rozi Syata said he would coordinate with human resources and the supervisory body authorized to sanction civil servants for legal violations.

Tatik could be discharged from her post if found guilty, Rozi said. -- JP
