JAKARTA: The city administration is set to hold the No Car Day program next month, an official has said.

Next month's No Car Day is scheduled to be held in Kota Tua area in West Jakarta, along Jl. Pemuda in East Jakarta and Kelapa Gading area in North Jakarta.

Head of the City Environmental Management Board Budirama Natakusumah said Tuesday the administration would make the program a regular monthly activity in the city's five municipalities.

""We'll ask Jakartans to participate in this program by riding bicycles on the No Car Days,"" said Budirama.

The No Car Day program made its debut last Saturday with the closing of the city's main thoroughfares Jl Sudirman in South Jakarta and Jl Thamrin in Central Jakarta.

However, it was unsuccessful, with many cars still entering the closed-off streets and an increase in traffic congestion across the city, as motorists sought alternative roads.

""Well, it's not an easy job to make the No Car Day program work on its first trial; that's why we have to continue with the program every month in each of the municipalities,"" Budirama said. --JP
