BANDUNG: Train company PT Kereta Api has warned people traveling home for the Idul Fitri celebration to be careful when crossing unguarded train crossings across Java.

The company's spokesman, Noor Hamidi, said many unguarded crossings were located in Jakarta, Bandung, the Central Java towns of Purwokerto and Semarang as well as the East Java towns of Madiun and Surabaya.

""Most of the unguarded crossings, or 57 of them, are located in Surabaya,"" Hamidi said Friday.

He said across Java there are 6,602 unguarded train crossings, but added most travelers will not pass them on their journeys home for the Idul Fitri holiday, which falls in another two weeks.

Noor said the company has deployed special staff to guard train crossings, but due to limited funds could only provide guards at 943 crossings in Java. -- JP
