SEMARANG: Temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius have been recorded along the northern coast of Central Java and the high temperatures are expected to continue through Idul Fitri, according to the Semarang office of the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency.

The head of the office's climatology station, M. Chaeran, said temperatures along the coast were higher than the usual 35.5 to 36.6 degrees Celsius.

He said the sun was passing directly over the area now, and this combined with dry winds blowing off the Java Sea had increased temperatures along the coast.

""The high temperatures will surely affect holiday makers traveling along the northern coast roads,"" he said.

He predicted the high temperatures would continue until about four days after Idul Fitri, when the rains were likely to start falling.

""Slowly the temperatures will go down after the start of the rainy season in late October or early November,"" he said. -- JP
