Graft investigation

The people of Sula Islands, North Maluku, are wondering when the case involving Sula Regent Ahmad Hidayat Mus will be thoroughly investigated.

So far, handling of the graft allegation has created an impression the government is reluctant to reach a settlement.

North Maluku Police chief Sr. Comr. Mustofa should be commended for his move to summon the regent for examination.

This summons needs the President's permission because the official in question is a second-level regional head.

So, on January 19 a regional police chief asked for the President's permission through the National Police chief.

His letter, sent also to the home minister and the Corruption Eradication Commission, referred to the regent as a suspect, citing deputy Ridwan Syahdan as a witness.

To date, no reports have been heard in follow-up to this request. The matter is now in the hands of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who should promptly respond to the regional police chief so that the case will not be delayed further.

The Sula community needs legal certainty and transparency over the case of these two leaders.

Whatever the outcome may be, it is of secondary importance to the Sula public. Their reputation may be restored if found innocent, or if found guilty they may need to account for their deeds.
