JAKARTA: The House of Representatives said Tuesday it planned to extend the period for ""fit and proper"" tests to select members for the anti-graft body KPK ""to ensure the quality of candidates"".
Gayus Lumbuun of the House's Commission III overseeing legal affairs said it usually took one month to conduct fit and proper tests for candidates seeking membership of state agencies such as KPK.
""We are considering extending the fit and proper test for KPK members so that we can get a better view regarding their track records,"" Gayus said.
""We have received many inputs from NGOs and the public about the KPK selection process, so we will improve our methods.""
He said it had been recommended the House not pass candidates with law enforcement backgrounds, particularly police and prosecutors.
But the House said it decided not to eliminate said candidates from the selection process.
Instead, it said it would scrutinize these candidates more carefully during the testing period.
The House would select five out of 10 candidates submitted by the KPK selection team, on approval from the President.
The House was waiting for the 10 names to be submitted and said it expected to start the fit and proper test by the end of November or early December. --JP
