JAMBI: Traffic accidents in Jambi during the long Idul Fitri holiday claimed 14 lives and injured dozens, mostly resulting from negligent or reckless driving.

""We placed more warnings and directional signs along one accident-prone strip of road but many motorists ignored them,"" Jambi Police chief of traffic Sr. Comr. Bambang Budi Santoso said Friday.

During the holiday Jambi Police deployed more than 600 officers. Most of them were stationed at 61 security posts throughout Jambi and on busy inter-province roads.

Santoso said there were fewer accidents over the Idul Fitri holiday this year than last.

""We've had a 30 to 35 percent decrease in the number of accidents."" --JP
