JAKARTA: More than 8,000 motorists queued at the Jakarta Police's ""One Stop"" service Monday to renew vehicle licenses, police said.

""Usually we receive around 5,000 people per day. Today the number increased by almost 70 percent,"" police vehicle license division head Comr. Arman Achdiat said.

Arman said police gave motorists a week to renew their license.

""We won't fine people whose licenses expired over the holiday, (from Oct. 12 to 19), but they should extend their permit this week,"" he said.

Vehicle owners who wish to renew expired licenses next week will be penalized, he said.

On Saturday about 2,600 motorists, of whom 80 percent were motorcyclists, extended vehicle permits at the Jakarta Police station.

According to Arman, Greater Jakarta has approximately 8 million vehicles. --JP
