Prosecutors to study Goro proposal

JAKARTA: State prosecutors will study a proposal made by lawyers for Hutomo ""Tommy"" Mandala Putra around the Goro land swap case submitted Monday during a mediation meeting at South Jakarta District Court.

""I will initially make a report on the proposal to the Attorney General and Bulog (State Logistic Agency) directors ... I can't comment on the proposals now,"" director of civil prosecution at the Attorney General's Office Joseph Suardi Sabda said.

Mediation judge Eddy Risdianto told prosecutors to be ready with their own draft on Oct. 30.

One of Tommy's lawyers, Elza Syarief, said the proposal was not an official offer and just a result of an informal discussion with the prosecutors in a previous mediation meeting.

""Maybe next week our client will officially offer his proposal, but not now,"" Elza told reporters.

The Goro land swap occurred in 1995 when the Tommy-owned PT Goro Batara Sakti agreed to exchange the Bulog's 20-hectare plot of land in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, with Goro's own land in Cilincing, North Jakarta.

Prosecutors believed the value of Goro's land was far below that of Bulog's land. -- JP/10
