SURABAYA: The Army plans to buy 16 Russian-made helicopters this year, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Djoko Santoso said Wednesday.
""It is just a normal weapons purchase to replace old equipment,"" he said on the sidelines of a ceremony at the Brawijaya Military Command here.
The Army will buy six Mi-35 attack helicopters and 10 Mi-17 transport helicopters.
It also plans to acquire 100 combat vehicles from state-owned arms maker PT Pindad and missiles from China and Poland.
""We will prioritize infantry weapons such as rifles and missiles,"" said Djoko.
He said Indonesian Military Headquarters had provided export credits of US$120 million to buy weaponry, as well as Rp 500 billion (US$54.52 million) for the construction of a new headquarters. -- JP
