JAKARTA: The House of Representatives said the status of Syamsul Bahri as a member of the General Election Commission (KPU) should be decided by the House and not by the President.
""President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono doesn't have the right to revoke Syamsul's membership even if he wasn't installed,"" House Speaker Agung Laksono told detik.com Thursday.
Agung said in order to resolve the problem, the House's Commission II overseeing home affairs could chose appropriate methods as regulated in Law No.22/2007 on General Election Organizer.
He said the first alternative was Syamsul could be directly replaced by a candidate under him. The second alternative was to conduct another selection process and the third was to wait for the legal ruling over his involvement in a corruption case.
""The Commission II can take any method they want to, as long as it doesn't violate the regulation,"" Agung said. -- JP/13
