DEPOK: The Depok administration is implementing a new way to to beat traffic congestion on Depok's main streets by making all public minivans drive in the left lane.
""They will also be allowed to stop only at shelters (provided only for public minivans), complying with traffic signs,"" Depok Police head Sr. Comr. Imam Pramukarno said recently.
The large number of public minivans in Depok has contributed a role in massive traffic congestion in neighboring Depok, which borders South Jakarta.
According to Imam, only 2,500 of Depoks 3,600 existing public mini vans are registered.
He also said the regulation would take place on a 3-kilometer section of Jl. Margonda that started at the Jl. Ramanda intersection and ran to the Jl. Kartini intersection.
The regulation, which will apply from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, is expected to take full effect on Nov. 5.
Imam said the police hoped the regulation would ease the traffic. -- JP
