TANGERANG: The House of Representatives has given the green light for the creation of a South Tangerang city.

Fachrudin, the chairman of House Commission II overseeing legal affairs, said Thursday the proposal would be submitted to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for approval by the end of the year.

""The new city will likely be formed early next year,"" he said Thursday during a visit to Tangerang along with other commission members.

Forming an independent municipality in the southern part of Tangerang regency was first proposed in 1992 by residents of Ciputat, Pamulang, Serpong and Pondok Aren.

The area in question had already transformed into an industrial, commercial and residential zone.

Regent Ismet Iskandar pushed for the three newly formed districts of East Ciputat, North Serpong and Setu also to be included in the proposed South Tangerang municipality.

Residents grouped under the Alliance of Residents Caring for Cisauk (APMC) want Cisauk and Pegedangan districts to be included in the new municipality.

""We'll ask the House to consider our request,"" APMC chairman Idham Kholid told the Post on Thursday, adding that the proposal had been rejected by Ismet and the council because the two districts are separated from the others by Cisadane River. -- JP
