JAKARTA: The Constitutional Court has told teachers requesting a review of the 2003 National Education System Law that they need to do more research before the legal process could continue.

Rahmatiah Abbas, a teacher, and Badryah Rivai, a university lecturer, said in the initial review session two weeks ago that the 2003 National Education System Law ran counter to the 1945 Constitution, inflicted losses on educators, and was not legally binding.

""We need more detailed explanations regarding the losses caused due to the law being endorsed that they pointed out, for example, how extensive were the losses, (and) how much,"" said Ahmad Syarifuddin Natabaya, the presiding judge.

The judge declined to set a date for the next session pending the submission of the additional data by the educators.

""We will examine the review request and consider whether the matter is significant enough to continue once the new information has been provided,"" Natabaya said. -- JP/rff
