JAKARTA: West Jakarta evicted people from Deprok traditional market in Kalideres on Thursday.

The sales activities of the people were said to disrupt traffic in the area.

The 750 street vendors didn't go easily, however. They complained the West Jakarta administration hadn't given them any place to go.

"We don't oppose the eviction, but the administration must offer us an alternative location where we can run our businesses," said a staple food vendor, Saojah, as quoted by Beritajakarta.com news portal.

The traditional market on Jl. Kebon Kelapa was the only one in the area for years.

Although the vendors operated without permits, they said they paid sanitation and security fees to local officials.

District head Ruslan who oversaw the eviction said he was acting at the request of nearby residents who found the activities of the vendors caused congestion in the area. --JP
