JEMBRANA: The Jembrana administration says it will cooperate with general insurance company PT Bhumiputera Bumida to provide insurance coverage for rice fields in the regency.

Around 4,500 hectares of rice fields will initially be covered as a pilot project.

"The program aims to anticipate losses if the region experiences crop failures," Jembrana Regent I Gede Winasa said Wednesday as quoted by BeritaBali.com.

"Crop failures could happen for any number of reasons, such as uncertain weather conditions and plant diseases," he said.

He said the program was eventually expected to provide comprehensive coverage for all farmers in the regency. Bhumiputera insurance agent Tegeh Mandiasa praised the government for assisting farmers, saying this was the first such program launched by a local administration in the country.

"We fully support the idea and hope the program will succeed in protecting farmers from any losses related to their rice fields," he said. --JP
