The government claims to promote democratic values but does no such thing. While hundreds of churches have been closed down by rent-a-mob types pretending to be good Muslims, the authorities sit idly by. Police take no action, and this only happens if they are paid or afraid.
These preman (thug) groups are funded by foreigners with a so-called religious agenda to take our country back to primitive times.
These foreigners also pay for the building of mosques. Our people remain uneducated in Holy Scripture, yet know how to be thugs.
This is a perversion of religion and of Indonesian sovereignty, yet it is tolerated, dare I say it encouraged at the top level. AGUNG ALIT

I'm sorry to say that Yash (The Jakarta Post, Feb. 11) must have a very constipated sense of humor if he cannot read Julia Suryakusuma's exquisitely humorous article with a smile on his face. Maybe he is the one behind the times?
