SEMARANG: A number of airline companies suspended their flights to and from the Achmad Yani airport in Semarang due to a heavy downpour that flooded airport grounds.
State-owned airport manager PT Angkasa Pura had deployed eleven water pumps to alleviate water levels along the runway and taxiways.
"Thousands of passengers are stranded ... following the postponed departures of a number of flights," said Angkasa Pura head Bambang Swastono.
Incessant rain Monday through Tuesday morning caused a flood in the city, submerging the Tawang railway station and the Gayamsari toll road.
Chief of the city's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency M. Chaeran warned transportation companies, including airlines, and fishermen to keep alert of the bad weather, storms and heavy rains expected to continue until the end of this month.
