BEKASI: Meat sellers at Pasar Baru traditional market in Bekasi municipality refused to trade any products, resulting in the "extinction" of local and imported beef from Bekasi traditional markets on Thursday.

Wardi, a vendor, said the absence of meat products was due to skyrocketing prices from distributors who usually stock three tons of imported products from Australia and New Zealand. The prices per kilogram rose by Rp 6,000 to Rp 12,000, resulting in prices ranging from Rp 15,000 to Rp 45,000 per kg.

"It's just unaffordable for us and our customers," he said Thursday as quoted by Tempointerakif news portal.

Another seller, Andi, said prices of local products were even higher. He cited Balinese beef as an example, which has risen to Rp 55,000 per kg from Rp 48,000.

"We can't make any profit on existing prices," he said.

Meat sellers at markets in Greater Jakarta have been refusing to sell meat since Wednesday. They plan to continue the protest until Feb. 22. --JP
