While Harajuku style -- with its do-it-yourself outfits and secondhand clothing -- can easily be translated into street wear, costume playing or cosplay is reserved for special events.
Cosplay involves dressing up as characters from manga and anime. Costumes can take months to complete, given the difficulty of finding the right outfit, shade of hair dye and accessories for a given character.
The heroes and heroines of anime tend to have hair that defies gravity and elaborate clothes, ranging from the sexy to the regal. But cosplay has become more than just a game of make-believe. The most important thing, whatever the clothing, is the attitude.
