PT PPLI responds

In response to the article entitled Dumps toxic waste overload in The Jakarta Post on Feb. 9, 2008, our company would like to provide certain facts and details to clarify some of the points covered in the article, which mentioned that the company can manage only 100,000 tons of hazardous waste per year.

We wish to clarify that this figure does not represent our capacity for the treatment and disposal of hazardous and non hazardous waste. PT PPLI targeted to receive around 100,000 tons of waste in 2007, which is only around 30 percent of the total treatment capacity.

Recently, and as part of the PPLI Capacity Upgrade works, PT PPLi received approval from the Ministry of Environment for the commencement of operations for the recently constructed Landfill Category-II, which is an addition to the existing Landfill Category-I .

This fully lined containment landfill is engineered to Indonesian and international standards and will be able to accept a further 1,000 tons/day for less hazardous waste and other non-hazardous wastes, thus significantly increasing the existing capacity.

Your report also mentioned that our company does not treat radioactive waste, infectious waste, explosives, pressurized gas containers, certain reactive wastes, oil above 500 ppm or ammonium salts.

But the government prohibits following types of wastes for direct landfilling without any pre-treatment, including radioactive waste, infectious wastes and explosives.

However, with the development of additional treatment technologies, the company currently recovers, treats, recycles and disposes of pressurized gas containers and their contents using a safe and environmentally sound Aerosol Can Crusher Unit.

We hope that our clarification and information can be useful to you.
