Sharia controversy

I disagree with the government's position. As we know, in several cities such as Tangerang, the law tends to discriminate against women. We see innocent women arrested because they were accused of being prostitutes, just because they were on the street after 7 p.m. What kind of law is this? This law limits women's existence in the public place! That's a violation of human rights. WULAN KUSUMA WARDHANI

The Indonesian government is making a big mistake not revoking the sharia bylaws. Indonesia is not an Islamic state. Women will continue to suffer the most. Even the Prophet made a woman ride a camel to Medina alone.

The government's inability to stand up to the local authorities with regard to the sharia-inspired bylaws will only lead to further instability. Imagine if each city has its own laws. Why aren't matters of a religious nature left to the ultimate authority, God. Let people make their own choices.

All bylaws which discriminate against basic human rights should be revoked. If the government is not taking action at the right time, the government will be at stake.

Indonesia, while traveling on the rocky road toward a representative, transparent democracy, must make the decision about whether this society will be secular, non-secular or something in between. Every nation has within its own unique context must these decisions also. Indonesia is a complex nation and will need to find its own unique solution.

What we all need is the right enforcement of the existing laws, to eradicate corrupt people from the House of Representatives, police department, justice institution, prosecutors' office, tax and customs, politicians and many more. Sharia law is not part of our Constitution.

If the government won't defend the Constitution who will?

I agree with the government's decision. Sharia helps people to enhance living quality. We must learn more about sharia from original references.

Totally disagree. Indonesia is a religious country not a country based on a religion (Islam). They should understand the difference.

If all the districts don't share the same laws, sharia or not, we'll need extradition treaties between districts and an FBI-like cross-border law enforcement agency. Welcome to the United States of Indonesia.
