BEKASI: Bekasi regency administration gave some 2,424 farm cooperatives more than Rp 3 billion (around US$300,000) worth of water pumps.
Bekasi deputy regent Darip Mulyana said that the aid was given in anticipation of a water crisis during a long draught. Bekasi is expected face a long dry season, beginning before the end of April.
"We are giving pumps to help ease the burden on farmers," Darip said, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.
Farming costs were high because each farmer had to hire water pumps from private owners for between Rp 5 and 600,000 during the planting season, Darip said. -- JP
