BANDUNG: Corruption convict Probosutedjo, half-brother of the late former president Soeharto, will be released on March 12, a year before completing his four-year jail term, officials said Tuesday.
They said the Justice and Human Rights Ministry had approved a request for the early release of Probosutedjo earlier this month.
Rachmat Priosutardjo, head of the Sukamiskin prison where Probosutedjo is confined, said his office submitted the request after Probosutedjo had served two thirds of his jail term.
Legally, with a record of good conduct, a prisoner can ask for conditional release after serving two thirds of a term.
After being released, the former prisoner must still report to prison officials every month until the sentence is fully served, he added.
Probosutedjo was transferred from Jakarta's Cipinang jail to Sukamiskin in Bandung, West Java, on March 3, 2006. He was taken to prison by force late in 2005 after the Supreme Court turned down his appeal against the four-year jail term handed down by a lower court. -- JP
