Sharia controversy

You are approaching a crossing. Go straight for a nowadays democracy, equal treatment of all people, economic prosperity. Turn left to sharia: dictatorship, dominance and violence against women.

Our country still does not have a common culture/tradition -- Indonesian culture. In the globalized world, ethnocentrism is on the rise. This leads to some people thinking unity may be found in common religion, while adopting a Middle Eastern culture.

However, this is misleading; look at Iraq, Aceh, Sudan. A sense of unity must be nurtured through the consistent implementation of the rule of law instead.

No, no, no! Indonesians do not need such bylaws at all. What we need is a government which upholds the existing laws and runs this beautiful country with logical minds, after all, this is the 21st century. Common on, wake up and do your best to catch up with our neighbors.

Pancasila is based on Indonesian wisdom. The government position has to comply it.

I think the government has chosen the best till they don't revoke the sharia-inspired by laws. Hopefully, this country doesn't become like Kosovo.

There should be a separation between the government and religion. The government should be secular and neutral, not favoring certain religions, which is against the fundamental rights of the people, as defined in the Pancasila state ideology -- equal rights and treatment for all.

I feel that by applying sharia bylaws, Indonesia is returning back to the old days. And the central government's decision for not intervening into the bylaws is like the brain, which fails to control the function of a certain part of the body. It will lead to the complete collapse of the system.

Sharia for Muslims only is fine for me. Be sure to implement it like in Saudi Arabia. Amputate thieves' hands and whip girls who have affairs with married men! Go for it!

I believe it's better to encourage morality and piety with kind guidance in the family than with sharia laws.

I strongly agree with the implementation of Islamic sharia as an ideology of our nation and it should be practiced in our daily life.

Indonesia will lose her identity. Most lovely kebaya, its unique cultures and entire traditional ceremonies will be banned and could found as history in textbooks. What are the main points for Indonesia to adopt sharia?
