MEDAN: Police, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice, are searching for two Nigerian citizens believed to be behind the recent attempt to smuggle 3.3 kilograms of heroin from Laos into Indonesia through Belawan seaport, located near Medan.

The two, identified only as Frank and Jeff, are believed to be the owners of the heroin, which police seized on Sunday.

The alleged drug courier, identified as Indonesian national Winarti, was arrested as she attempted to bring the heroin into the country from Penang, Malaysia.

North Sumatra's top drug cop, Sr. Comr. Anjan Pramuka Putra, said Winarti was Jeff's girlfriend.

He said the U.S. Department of Justice was involved in the case because the two Nigerians were part of an international narcotics syndicate.

He said police had received information that Frank was still in Laos and that Jeff was in Indonesia.

He alleged the two purchased the heroin for Rp 600 million on the order of three other Nigerians, who are serving sentences in Indonesian jails for drug crimes. --JP
