BATAM: Police have stepped up security at all ports on Batam, Bintan and Karimun islands, in Riau Islands province, after terrorist Mas Slamet Kastari escaped from a Singaporean prison Wednesday.

Provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Sutarman said the increased security measures were requested by Singapore's Internal Security Department, which fears the escapee, a Singaporean national, might try to make his way to Indonesia.

Kastari was detained by Indonesian immigration authorities for the possession of a fake identity card in 2000. He was again arrested in Tanjungpinang, Karimun, in 2001 for his alleged involvement in an attempt to crash a hijacked plane into Singapore's Changi International Airport.

Sutarman said police personnel would be deployed to sweep local Muslim prayer groups that Katsari frequented in the past.

"We are trying to prevent him from entering Indonesia and launching terrorist attacks in the country," he said.

He said Kastari spoke fluent Bahasa Indonesia, which could help him get into the country.--JP
