Digital music libraries are said to be a reflection of the listener's personality. Each week, The Jakarta Post peeks into the iPod of one well-known local figure.
I Wayan Balawan is an Indonesian jazz prodigy. He is the only jazz guitarist in the country who uses his own unique "eight finger tap" technique, also known as the "touching tapping" style.
The guitarist, originally from Bali, formed the band Batuan Ethnic Fusion and released an album, GloBaliSm, which mixes jazz guitar with traditional Balinese instruments, like gamelan.
He released a self-titled album, Balawan, in 2001 and his second album, Magic Fingers, in 2005
Balawan is currently working on his next album and teaches guitar in Ubud, Bali.
1. Sleep Walk by Jeff Beck. The guitar play in this song is "slashing". Every time I listen to it I get goosebumps.
2. A Song for You by Christina Aguilera. She sings jazz in this song, which is very good.
3. Save the Last Dance for Me by Michael Buble. I like old tunes. This one has a touch of rumba in it.
4. One Night Stand by John Mclaughlin. This is a nice fast tempo all instrumental song.
5. See You Soon by I Wayan Balawan. This is my own song, which will be released in April. I listen to it over and over again to find whether there are mistakes in it.
