Professors call for character building

In observance of the 100th anniversary of National Awakening, 100 professors from private and state universities across the city gathered Tuesday to declare a push for national character building.

Read out at midnight, the moral call capped the gathering held at Yogyakarta Cultural Park. A series of dance performances representing various regions preceded the evening's main event.

Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, rectors of universities and school headmasters were among attendees who witnessed the professors appeal to the nation to regain political sovereignty, economic self-reliance and national character.

Prof. Suryo Guritno of Gadjah Mada University said in his speech that character building would help the nation fight the forays of foreign cultures that endangered traditional values of cooperation and volunteerism.
